Day 1

Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa

Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a scenic three-hour drive from Moshi to Lemosho Gate on the western side of the mountain, where our Serengeti Wildlife Safaris guides and support team assist with park registration and payment of fees. From there, you’ll drive to the Lemosho Glades trailhead and begin your trek through the lush rainforest, where untouched vegetation often grows across the narrow track. This area is rich in flora and fauna, more so than the busier routes. Today’s trek follows the less-traveled Chamber’s Route, offering a serene and immersive experience. After about 3–4 hours, you’ll reach Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, situated at approximately 2,800 meters (9,170 ft). Here, our professional team welcomes you with warm hospitality, hearty meals, and expert guidance, ensuring a safe and comfortable stay as you acclimatize for the next stage of your Kilimanjaro journey.

Mti Mkumbwa to Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, carrying a lunch box, you’ll begin your trek from Mti Mkubwa through the remaining rainforest toward the giant moorland zone, guided by our experienced Serengeti Wildlife Safaris team. The ideal spot for lunch is in a beautiful valley just outside the Shira Crater at approximately 3,050m (10,000 ft). Afterward, the trail leads into the Shira Caldera, a high-altitude desert plateau rarely visited by trekkers. Shira is the third of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic cones, shaped by ancient lava flows from Kibo Peak. The crater rim bears the marks of weather and volcanic activity, offering dramatic and unique scenery. Today’s trek provides your first close view of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s majestic summit, while our professional guides and mountain crew ensure a safe, steady pace, provide support, and highlight the unique flora, fauna, and geological features along this remote and stunning route.

Today’s trek involves a modest elevation gain of just 210m (700 ft), allowing your body to acclimate gradually to the high altitude while enjoying a relaxed pace set by our professional guides. The plateau’s scenery is truly breathtaking, featuring expansive alpine desert landscapes, unique vegetation, and dramatic views of surrounding peaks. Along the way, our mountain crew ensures you are well-supported with water, guidance, and assistance, making the hike both safe and enjoyable. You’ll pass the Lava Tower along the southern flank of Kibo, enjoying dramatic views of the surrounding alpine desert. The trail then descends gently to Barranco Hut, a spectacular campsite at the foot of Kibo Peak. Although the camp is only about 140m (465 ft) higher than Shira 2, the cumulative altitude gain today exceeds 4,300m (14,000 ft), making this day crucial for acclimatization. Our professional guides maintain a steady pace, monitor your well-being, and share insights about the unique geology and landscape. Upon arrival, our mountain crew ensures hearty meals, expert support, and comfortable camp arrangements, allowing you to rest fully and prepare for the exciting climb over the Barranco Wall tomorrow.
