Day 1

Kigali to Akagera and Southern Game Drive

Kigali to Akagera and Southern Game Drive

Your driver picks you up in Kigali early in the morning, and you start the journey toward Akagera National Park. The drive takes about two and a half hours, passing small towns and farms before you reach the park gate. After checking in, you begin your first game drive through the southern area of the park. This part of Akagera has a mix of woodland, lakeshores, and open grassland, which gives you a good chance of spotting giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalo, and various birds. You take a lunch break inside the park and continue exploring until late afternoon. You arrive at your lodge in the early evening, where you can relax, watch the sunset, and enjoy dinner.

Full Northern Game Drive and Return to Kigali

Full Northern Game Drive and Return to Kigali

You leave the lodge early so you can make the most of the cooler morning hours when animals are more active. The northern plains are the best area for wildlife in Akagera and offer wide open views. You will spend several hours following the main game tracks as you look for elephants, rhinos, lions, hyenas, and large herds of herbivores. The landscape becomes drier and more open the farther north you go, which makes spotting wildlife easier. After the game drive, you exit the park through the northern gate and start the drive back to Kigali. You arrive in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on road and weather conditions.
