3-Day Mount Meru Trekking | Short Hike

Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Your trek starts at Momella Gate, where you complete registration and meet the armed park ranger who accompanies all Meru climbs. The trail begins through open grasslands where animals such as buffalo, giraffes, and warthogs are often seen grazing. You then ascend into lush montane forest filled with birds, monkeys, and ancient fig trees. The path is steady but not overly steep, offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy the scenery and take photos. After several hours, you reach Miriakamba Hut, set in a peaceful clearing on the lower slopes. Here you enjoy a warm meal, review the next day’s plan with your guide, and rest early in preparation for the steeper climb ahead.

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Today begins with a gradual but consistent climb through tall heather and forested terrain as you move higher up the mountain. Along the way you stop at viewpoints that overlook the Meru Crater and its dramatic ash cone. As you continue upward, the trail becomes steeper, especially near the famous wooden steps leading to Saddle Hut. Upon arrival, you settle in and enjoy lunch before taking an acclimatization walk to Little Meru at 3,820m, where you get stunning views of Kilimanjaro and the crater below. This short hike boosts your chances of a successful summit. After returning to camp, you have dinner and sleep early to prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Saddle Hut to Summit, descend to Momella Gate

Your summit push begins around midnight with a steep climb along the narrow ridge that traces the crater’s edge. Using headlamps, you move slowly and steadily with your guide and ranger, climbing over rocky sections as the night sky reveals stars above the silhouette of Meru’s rim. As dawn breaks, you approach Socialist Peak at 4,566m, a spectacular viewpoint offering breathtaking panoramas of Kilimanjaro and the crater bowl. After celebrating and taking photos, you start the long descent back to Saddle Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Miriakamba and finally to Momella Gate. Here you receive your certificates before driving back to Arusha.
