Day 1
Start your day with a scenic drive of about 100 km north from Addis Ababa through the Ethiopian highlands, passing picturesque villages and lush farmland (1.5–2 hours). Arrive at Debre Libanos Monastery, one of Ethiopia’s most important spiritual sites, founded in the 13th century. Explore the beautifully decorated church, visit the museum with ancient manuscripts and religious artifacts, and learn about the life of Saint Tekle Haymanot. Take a short hike to the saint’s cave, offering peaceful surroundings and spectacular views of the gorge below. Enjoy lunch at a viewpoint overlooking the dramatic Jemma River Gorge, then continue to the historic Portuguese Bridge, a perfect spot for photography and wildlife spotting, including Gelada baboons.
