Leave the rainforest behind and ascend into heath and moorland terrain. The trail opens to wide views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. The day is moderately challenging with steady elevation gain.

Trek across the alpine desert toward the Lava Tower area before descending to Barranco Camp. Although the net elevation gain is modest, this day is physically demanding and helps the body adjust slightly to altitude despite the shortened itinerary. Barranco Camp offers spectacular views of the Barranco Wall.

Begin with the ascent of the Barranco Wall, a hands-on scramble that is exhilarating rather than technical. After reaching the top, continue across ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. This shorter day helps conserve energy ahead of the summit push.

Begin the summit climb around midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at sunrise, the highest point in Africa. After photos and celebration, descend carefully to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.
