Addis Ababa to Semera | Erta Ale Volcano

Begin your journey with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the gateway to the Afar lowlands. Travel by 4x4 into the heart of the Danakil Depression, passing Afdera Lake, vast lava fields, and striking desert scenery. In the evening, hike up Erta Ale Volcano, one of the few volcanoes in the world with a permanent lava lake. Witness glowing molten lava illuminating the night sky, an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Erta Ale to Lake Assale | Sunset over Salt Flats & Afar Traditions

After sunrise views over the volcanic crater, descend into the desert plains and continue deeper into the Danakil Depression. The scenery slowly transforms into endless salt flats and mirage-like horizons. Arrive at Lake Assale, one of the lowest points in Africa, where vast salt fields stretch to the horizon. Enjoy a spectacular sunset before continuing to Hamed Ela, the center of traditional Afar salt mining, and experience local customs that have remained unchanged for centuries.

Dallol | Salt Mountains | Mekelle / Addis Ababa

Explore Dallol with Sun rise at lake Assale often described as the most alien landscape on Earth. Discover vividly colored sulfur springs, acidic pools, salt pinnacles, and mineral terraces formed by intense geothermal activity. Continue to the nearby salt mountains, where Afar miners still extract salt by hand using age-old techniques. Drive to Mekelle or Semera and fly back to Addis Ababa. Conclude the journey with a farewell dinner and transfer to Bole International Airport.
