Tarangire National Park (2,600 km²) has an unrivalled landscape of open plains dotted with thousands of baobab trees. It is located about 120 km south of Arusha. Tarangire is known for its lions and very large herds of buffalo. This is one of Africa’s little-known gems and should be on the itinerary of all lovers of wilderness and solitude. Animals found in the park include zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant, Masai giraffe, and fringe-eared oryx (gemsbok). Predators include lion, cheetah, and leopard. Birders can look out for the endemic ashy starling, rufous-tailed weaver, and black-collared lovebird.

The Serengeti, one of the largest parks in Africa at 15,000 sq km, is home to some three million large mammals and features a diversity of landscapes. In addition to the migrating herds, you may also see cheetah, lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, wildebeest, hartebeest, topi, eland, crocodiles, Thomson’s gazelle, and Grant’s gazelle, among many others. With over five hundred bird species identified, the park is a rich ornithological area, including ostrich, secretary bird, marabou stork, and the largest flighted bird on Earth, the kori bustard.
