Day 1
Diani/Mombasa to Tsavo east
Diani/Mombasa to Tsavo east
Depart Diani early (6:00 AM) for the roughly 3-hour drive to Voi via the Nairobi highway. Enter Tsavo East through the iconic Voi Gate and head straight into the park for an afternoon game drive. Tsavo East is Kenya's largest national park, famous for its vast open plains, ancient riverbeds, and the legendary red dust elephants — so named for rolling in the park's distinctive rust-red soil. Voi Wildlife Lodge is perched dramatically on a hillside overlooking a busy waterhole where elephants and hippos visit at dusk, making it a brilliant sundowner spot. Check in, freshen up, and settle in for dinner with a view.

Full day in Tsavo East
Full day in Tsavo East
Two game drives today — dawn and dusk are the golden hours when wildlife is most active. Head out at first light before the savannah heat builds. Make for Aruba Dam, where hippos and crocodiles bask in the shallows and over 50 bird species congregate around the water's edge. Scan the plains for the Yatta Plateau — stretching over 300 km, it is the world's longest lava flow and creates a dramatic backdrop to the open grasslands. Tsavo's iconic red elephants travel in large herds and are almost always visible near water sources. Lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and zebras roam the plains, while over 500 recorded bird species make this a paradise for birdwatchers. Return to the lodge midday to rest and escape the heat before heading out again for the afternoon game drive.

Full Day in Tsavo West
Full Day in Tsavo West
After an early breakfast, drive west across to Tsavo West. Tsavo West offers a dramatically different landscape of volcanic hills, lush springs, and ancient lava fields. Visit Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water bubbles up from volcanic aquifers beneath the Chyulu Hills. A glass observation chamber allows you to watch hippos and Nile crocodiles gliding through the water from below the surface — a truly extraordinary experience. Explore the Shetani Lava Fields, a sweeping expanse of jagged black volcanic rock formed just 200 years ago and believed by local communities to be the path of a shetani (devil). On clear days, the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon beyond the Chyulu Hills.
