Day 2
Walking Safari with a Ranger in Tarangire National Park
Walking Safari with a Ranger in Tarangire National Park
The Tarangire River runs through the park year-round, drawing giraffe, zebra, antelope and buffalo to its banks – and the predators that follow them. Lion are a reliable presence here, and regularly seen.
In the dry season the dynamic shifts. As other water sources disappear across the surrounding landscape, the river becomes the only option for miles around, and elephant herds converge in numbers that make Tarangire home to the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania for much of the year.
The bush walk covers different ground – an hour and a half on foot with a ranger, at a pace that opens up what a vehicle moves past too quickly. Mongoose, guinea fowl and vervet monkey are common; fresh elephant and buffalo tracks in the soil tell you what passed through before you arrived.

Day 3
Classic Game Drive in Tarangire National Park
Classic Game Drive in Tarangire National Park
Your second day in Tarangire opens up the sections of the park you didn't reach yesterday. The park rewards the extra time – gerenuk and oryx are both present here, species rarely seen in the Serengeti, and worth looking for in the drier, more open stretches.
Rock hyrax are common on the granite outcrops – small, unhurried animals that tend to allow a close approach. They're also, despite appearances, among the elephant's closest living relatives.
For birders, Tarangire is one of the richer parks in Tanzania, with over 550 recorded species. Binoculars are in the vehicle if you need them.

Day 4
Spotting Lions in Ngorongoro Crater
Spotting Lions in Ngorongoro Crater
Today, the descent into the crater takes you through forest before the caldera floor opens up below – a wide, enclosed landscape where elephant, buffalo, zebra, lion and a small resident population of black rhino move largely undisturbed. The crater's permanent water and grazing keep its wildlife here year-round, which is what gives a day on the floor its particular reliability.
Lunch is a picnic at Lake Magadi, where hippos sit in the shallows and yellow-billed storks and other waterbirds work the edges. The crater has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1979 – a designation that reflects both its ecological significance and the extraordinary density of what lives within it.
