Day 2

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park

The Tarangire River runs through the park year-round, drawing giraffe, zebra, antelope and buffalo to its banks – and the lions that follow them. They are regularly seen and, in this park, not difficult to find.
In the dry season the river becomes the only water source for miles around, and elephant herds converge accordingly. Tarangire holds the largest elephant population in northern Tanzania for much of the year – particularly June to October and December to March. The herds are well habituated to vehicles and often approach at close range, unhurried and largely indifferent.

Day 3

Safari in Ngorongoro Crater & Transfer to Ndutu

Safari in Ngorongoro Crater & Transfer to Ndutu

An early start gets you into the crater before the morning light fades. The descent takes around 30 minutes through forest, with a viewpoint stop at the rim before the caldera floor opens up below. The crater holds one of the highest concentrations of wildlife per square kilometre on the continent – elephant, buffalo, zebra, lion and a small resident population of black rhino, all within a single enclosed landscape. Cheetah are present too, though less predictable. The permanent water and grazing keep most animals here year-round, which gives the day a particular reliability. A mid-morning stop at Lake Magadi is worth the pause – hippos surface near the shore, and yellow-billed kites tend to take an interest in any food left unattended. The crater has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1979.

Main Destination:
Ngorongoro Crater
Best Time To Visit June to October (Wildlife viewing is best)
High Season Most of the year – July to March (Expect crowds)

Day 4

Calcing Season in Ndutu (Serengeti Ecosystem)

Calcing Season in Ndutu (Serengeti Ecosystem)

Ndutu sits in the southwestern corner of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where the plains open into the southern Serengeti. It sees far fewer vehicles than the central park, and the landscape has a quieter, more remote quality for it.

From late January to mid-March, this is where the Great Migration calves. Thousands of wildebeest are born here daily – on their feet within minutes, running within hours. The concentration of newborns draws every significant predator in the ecosystem: lion, leopard, cheetah, serval and caracal all move through the area during this period. Few wildlife events on the continent are as concentrated or as easy to witness from a vehicle.

Ndutu (Southern Serengeti NP)
Accommodation:
Nyikani Migration Camp Ndutu

Day 5

Calving Season in Ndutu and Transfer to Serengeti

Calving Season in Ndutu and Transfer to Serengeti

Beyond the calving season, Ndutu holds wildlife year-round. Elephant, giraffe and a range of antelope move through the area, and the two lakes – Ndutu and Masek – draw animals to their shores in numbers that make them worth stopping at. The acacia woodland around the water is good for leopard and smaller cats.
The area carries older history too. In 1973, archaeologists uncovered stone tools and early human remains here dating back over 500,000 years – placing Ndutu alongside Olduvai Gorge as part of the broader evidence that this region sits at the origin of our species.

Main Destination:
Ndutu (Southern Serengeti NP)
Accommodation:
Ndutu Kati Kati Tented Camp
  • Mid-range tented camp bordering Ndutu (Southern Serengeti NP) without fences
Meals & Drinks:
  • All meals included
  • Drinking water (Other drinks not included)

Day 6

Exploring Great Migration in the Southern Plains of Serengeti

Exploring Great Migration in the Southern Plains of Serengeti

The southern Serengeti is open grassland – wide, flat and uninterrupted in a way that distinguishes it from the woodland and kopje country further north. From December to April, the short rains bring fresh growth that draws the migration south: zebra, wildebeest and antelope in large numbers, with the predators that follow them.
During the calving season, wildebeest drop their young across the open plains – on their feet within minutes, which is less a marvel than a necessity. Antelope calves arrive around the same time. Your guide will help locate newborns and read what's happening around them.

Main Destination:
Southern Serengeti National Park
Best Time To Visit January to February and June to October (Different areas are best at different times)
High Season July to March (The Seronera area is crowded)
Best Weather June to October (Little to no rainfall)

Day 7

Exploring Great Migration in the Southern Plains of Serengeti

Exploring Great Migration in the Southern Plains of Serengeti

A second day in the southern Serengeti opens up ground the first didn't reach. The lion prides here are well established and regularly seen – large family groups that move through the open grassland with a visibility the woodland parks don't offer. A full day allows for the kind of extended watching that a single sighting doesn't – cubs, territorial behaviour, the dynamics of a pride at rest and in motion.

Elephant, buffalo, zebra and antelope move through alongside them, and vervet monkey are common in the acacia stands.

By evening, you are transferred back to your lodge in Arusha.
