Formed millions of years ago after a massive volcanic eruption, the crater is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and creates a unique ecosystem that supports an incredible concentration of wildlife.
The main activity during the visit is an exciting game drive on the crater floor. Visitors descend about 600 meters into the crater in a 4x4 safari vehicle accompanied by a professional guide. The crater is home to a wide variety of animals including lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeests, hyenas, and many antelope species. It is also one of the few places in Tanzania where visitors may have a chance to spot the rare black rhino.
During the game drive, guests will explore open grasslands, acacia forests, and wetlands such as Lake Magadi, which attracts flamingos and other bird species. Visitors usually stop at a scenic picnic site near the hippo pool to enjoy lunch.
