After breakfast and a briefing, drive for 2–3 hours to Marangu Gate for registration before starting the trek. Hike through the rainforest to Mandara Camp. An optional visit to Maundi Crater offers great views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Along the way, spot eucalyptus trees, birds, and colobus monkeys. Spend the night at Mandara Hut in preparation for the next day’s hike.

Day 2
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
After breakfast, depart the rainforest clearings and follow a steadily rising trail across open moorland to Horombo Camp. Enjoy impressive views of Mawenzi and Kibo’s summit, and watch for giant lobelias and groundsels along the way. As you gain altitude, you may start to feel its effects. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 3
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
After breakfast, continue ascending and pass the last water point, heading across the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation fades from heathland into a barren, moonlike landscape. Arrive for dinner, rest, and preparation for the summit attempt. Staying at Kibo Hut’s high altitude helps improve acclimatization before the final climb.

Day 4

In the early hours (midnight to 2 a.m.), begin the steep ascent over loose scree or snow to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, with stunning views along the way. After celebrating and taking photos at the summit, descend to Kibo Hut for rest and lunch, then continue down to Horombo Camp for the night.

Day 5
Horombo Hut to Moshi/Arusha
Horombo Hut to Moshi/Arusha
After breakfast, descend steadily through the moorland to Mandara Hut, then continue along a forest trail to Marangu Gate. Lower sections can be wet and muddy, so gaiters and trekking poles are useful. Lighter clothing is usually sufficient, but keep rain gear and warm layers handy. A vehicle will meet you at the gate for the 2–3 hour transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
