Day 1-2
Majete Wildlife Reserve

Travel from Blantyre into Majete Wildlife Reserve for two nights at Mkulumadzi Lodge, set within the reserve beside the Shire River. Majete is one of Malawi’s great conservation success stories, where wildlife restoration has transformed a once depleted landscape into a thriving protected wilderness.
Explore on game drives and guided walks, searching for elephant, lion, buffalo and the reserve’s other wildlife while learning more about the conservation work behind Majete’s recovery. Staying inside the reserve allows you to settle immediately into the rhythm of safari, with the wilderness surrounding you from the outset.
Two nights provides an immersive introduction to Majete before the journey leaves the bush and heads into the cooler Thyolo Highlands.

Day 3-4
Satemwa Tea Estate
Satemwa Tea Estate
Leave Majete and travel into the Thyolo Highlands for two nights at Huntingdon House on the historic Satemwa Tea Estate. Here the journey moves beyond Malawi’s national parks and into a landscape of tea fields, forest and working estates.
Explore the estate and learn how tea is grown and produced, walk through the surrounding countryside and forests, and enjoy the cooler climate of the highlands. The experience offers an insight into a very different side of Malawi, combining beautiful landscapes with the history and everyday life of one of the country’s most important agricultural regions.
Two nights allows time to explore rather than simply pass through, making Thyolo one of the defining differences between this journey and a more conventional Malawi safari.

Day 5
The Zomba Plateau
The Zomba Plateau
Continue north to the Zomba Plateau for an overnight stay beneath one of Malawi’s most distinctive highland landscapes. Spend the afternoon exploring forest trails, waterfalls and viewpoints across the plains below, enjoying the cooler mountain air before continuing into Liwonde the following day.
This is deliberately a shorter stay than elsewhere on the journey, providing a scenic link between the tea country of Thyolo and the wildlife of the Shire Valley.

Day 6-8
Liwonde National Park
Liwonde National Park
Descend from the highlands into Liwonde National Park for three nights at Kuthengo Camp beside the Shire River. After Majete, this second safari area reveals a very different landscape, where river, floodplain and woodland support an exceptional concentration of wildlife and birdlife.
Explore on morning and afternoon game drives, continue after dark on night drives and take to the Shire River by boat to watch elephant, hippo, crocodile and other wildlife along the banks. Guided walks offer another perspective, slowing the safari down to tracks, plants, birds and the smaller details of the bush.
Three nights gives you two full days to experience Liwonde properly and allows activities to be shaped around wildlife and conditions rather than a fixed schedule. Combined with Majete, it creates two contrasting safari experiences within the same journey.

Day 9-11
Lake Malawi
Lake Malawi
Leave Liwonde and continue to Lake Malawi for three nights at Pumulani, set above the clear waters of the Nankumba Peninsula. After the wildlife and highlands of the previous days, the final chapter is deliberately slower and more indulgent.
Spend your time swimming and snorkelling, explore the lake by kayak or simply relax beside the water. There are opportunities to discover more of the surrounding area and lake communities, while evenings bring the chance to watch the light fade across one of Africa’s great lakes.
Three nights gives you time to properly enjoy Lake Malawi rather than treating it as a brief beach extension, with the comfort and setting of Pumulani providing a relaxed finale to this more in depth journey through the country.

Day 12
Fly Home from Lilongwe
Fly Home from Lilongwe
Leave Pumulani and travel by boat and road to Lilongwe. Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, bringing your journey through Majete, the Thyolo Highlands, Zomba, Liwonde and Lake Malawi to a close.
