Day 2
Travel to Antsirabe

Leave Antananarivo and begin your journey south through Madagascar’s central highlands towards Antsirabe. The road passes rice fields, villages and changing highland scenery, providing your first sense of everyday life beyond the capital.
Spend the afternoon exploring Antsirabe, known for its colourful pousse pousse, colonial architecture and long history as a highland spa town. Stay overnight at Couleur Café before continuing towards the rainforests of Ranomafana the following morning.

Day 3-4
Ranomafana National Park
Ranomafana National Park
Continue south towards Ranomafana National Park for two nights beside one of Madagascar’s most important rainforest reserves. The journey leaves the open highlands behind as the landscape becomes greener and more mountainous.
Explore Ranomafana on foot with an experienced local guide, searching for lemurs, chameleons, frogs and the extraordinary variety of plants and wildlife found within the forest. The park is particularly known for its lemur diversity, while night walks reveal another side of Madagascar as nocturnal species become active.
Two nights gives you a full day to explore the rainforest before the road journey continues south through the highlands.

Leave Ranomafana and continue towards Fianarantsoa, travelling through highland scenery, rice terraces and rural communities. The journey is part of the experience, revealing a side of Madagascar that is easily missed when travelling between regions by air.
Spend the night at La Rizière, with time to explore locally and experience one of Madagascar’s most important highland towns before continuing south towards the landscapes of Andringitra.

Day 6-7
Ambalavao and Tsaranoro Valley
Ambalavao and Tsaranoro Valley
Continue south through Ambalavao towards the dramatic landscapes surrounding Andringitra National Park for two nights at Camp Catta. Granite peaks rise above valleys and villages here, creating one of the most striking sections of the journey.
Explore on foot with local guides, choosing walks according to your interests and fitness. Look for ring tailed lemurs among the rocks and forest, enjoy the mountain scenery and experience a quieter part of Madagascar away from the country’s better known visitor routes.
Two nights allows time to appreciate the landscape rather than simply driving through it, making this one of the defining stops on the road south.

Day 8-9
Isalo National Park

Continue south towards Isalo National Park for two nights at Le Relais de la Reine. The landscape changes dramatically again as highlands and mountains give way to sandstone formations, open grassland and deep canyons.
Spend a full day exploring Isalo on foot with a local guide, following trails through the park towards viewpoints, natural pools and hidden valleys. Look for ring tailed lemurs and other wildlife while discovering a landscape unlike anywhere earlier in the journey.
After the rainforests of Ranomafana and mountains around Andringitra, Isalo provides a dramatic final national park experience and demonstrates just how quickly Madagascar’s landscapes can change.

Leave Isalo and continue towards Toliara as the landscape becomes increasingly dry and the distinctive vegetation of southern Madagascar begins to appear.
Spend your final night in the south at the Arboretum d’Antsokay, surrounded by a remarkable collection of plants from Madagascar’s spiny forest region. It provides one final reminder of the island’s extraordinary biodiversity before flying back to Antananarivo the following day.

Return to Tana
Fly from Toliara back to Antananarivo, avoiding the long overland journey back through the country. Transfer to La Varangue for your final night, with time to relax after your journey through Madagascar’s highlands, rainforests, mountains and southern landscapes.
