Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve
Set off early in the morning for Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of the few places on Earth where wildlife still thrives in large, relatively undisturbed numbers, much like it once did across Africa’s vast plains and forests. As the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem, the Mara is famous for the dramatic seasonal migration of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and their accompanying predators.
Arrive in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive to begin exploring this remarkable reserve.

Masai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast, enjoy a full-day game drive in Maasai Mara National Reserve with a packed lunch provided. The reserve is renowned for its black-maned lions, abundant resident wildlife, and as one of the few places where the Big Five can often be spotted during a single morning drive.
Cheetahs here are notably relaxed, sometimes resting in the shade beneath safari vehicles, with a few even climbing onto the roof for a better vantage point when scanning for prey. For bird enthusiasts, the Mara is equally rewarding, with nearly 500 recorded species, including 16 species of eagles, numerous hawks and falcons, six species of vultures, eight species of storks, four species of bustards—including the Kori bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird—and nine species of sunbirds.

Lake Naivasha
Lake Naivasha
Enjoy an early morning drive to Lake Naivasha, the highest and one of the most beautiful lakes in the Great Rift Valley. Sitting at 1,910 meters (6,200 feet), its fresh waters are surrounded by dense papyrus reeds—once used by ancient Egyptians to make paper. These reeds provide a haven for birdlife, with kingfishers perching along the edges and herons quietly hunting for food.
Lake Naivasha is a paradise for bird enthusiasts, with over 400 recorded species. It is also a popular weekend getaway for Nairobi residents, offering activities such as sailing, water skiing, and fishing. Due to its high altitude, the water remains too cold for crocodiles, although hippos are commonly found in the lake. Along the shores, vineyards cultivate grapes for the country’s growing wine industry.

Similar panoramic scenery can be enjoyed from the Poacher’s Lookout.
You may also visit the relatively young Chaimu Crater, formed less than 200 years ago from black volcanic rock, which can be climbed for those interested.
