As the trees become smaller and less dense, the landscape opens dramatically, revealing giant heathers, volcanic outcrops, and expansive views across the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. The trail steadily climbs toward the Shira Plateau, offering the first spectacular views of Kibo Peak. The cooler temperatures and changing vegetation provide a striking contrast to the rainforest experienced on the previous day.

Trekkers enjoy wide-open landscapes dotted with giant groundsels, everlasting flowers, and hardy alpine vegetation adapted to high-altitude conditions. The gradual ascent allows the body to adjust naturally to the increasing elevation while providing stunning panoramic views of Kibo Peak and surrounding valleys.

Day 4
Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut Area and Return
Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut Area and Return
This dedicated acclimatization day follows the important "climb high, sleep low" principle. The trek ascends into a harsher alpine environment where vegetation becomes increasingly sparse due to lower temperatures and limited moisture. Volcanic rock formations dominate the landscape, and the scenery becomes more dramatic as the mountain rises above the clouds. Returning to a lower elevation for the night helps improve acclimatization and increases the likelihood of a successful summit.
Elevation Gain: +350m (Acclimatization Hike)
Vegetation Type: Moorland transitioning to Alpine Desert.

Day 5
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

The trail ascends steadily through the alpine desert zone, characterized by rocky terrain, strong winds, and minimal vegetation. Upon reaching Lava Tower at 4,630m, trekkers experience a significant altitude gain before descending to Barranco Camp. The descent allows the body to recover while adapting to the higher elevation reached during the day. Barranco Camp is famous for its spectacular views and giant senecio plants.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the ascent of the famous Barranco Wall, one of the most exciting sections of the Lemosho Route. Although steep in places, the climb is non-technical and rewards trekkers with incredible views of glaciers, valleys, and surrounding peaks. After reaching the top, the trail traverses ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp. The landscape remains largely barren, with only a few hardy plants capable of surviving in these harsh conditions.
