You begin at Machame Gate in thick montane rainforest, where humidity is high and vegetation is dense with tall trees, vines, moss, and rich birdlife. The trail climbs steeply through muddy forest paths.

Day 2
Machame Camp - Shira Camp
Machame Camp - Shira Camp
As you climb higher, the rainforest fades into heath and moorland, with giant heathers, shrubs, and volcanic rock appearing. Air becomes cooler and thinner, and views open up across the mountain.
Elevation gain: ~800m
Vegetation: Heath & moorland
Overnight: Shira Camp (Shira Plateau).

Day 3
Shira Camp - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp
Shira Camp - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp
You ascend into alpine desert, a dry, rocky environment with very little vegetation. After reaching Lava Tower, you descend into a slightly greener valley for acclimatization.
Highest point: ~4,600m
Vegetation: Alpine desert (rocky, sparse plants)
Overnight: Barranco Camp (moorland transition zone).

Day 4
Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp
Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp
You start by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, surrounded by alpine vegetation and rocky cliffs. The landscape remains dry but less extreme than higher zones.
Elevation gain: small net gain
Vegetation: Alpine desert / sparse shrubs
Overnight: Karanga Camp.

Day 5
Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp
Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp
The environment becomes very harsh, entering true alpine desert with almost no vegetation. Temperatures drop significantly, and oxygen levels are much lower.
Elevation gain: ~600m
Vegetation: Bare volcanic rock, minimal plant life
Overnight: Barafu Camp (base camp).

Day 6
Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp
You climb into the arctic zone, where snow, ice, and freezing winds dominate. At the summit of Uhuru Peak, there is almost no vegetation at all only glaciers and volcanic ice.
Summit elevation: 5,895m
Vegetation: Arctic zone (ice, rock, no plant life)
Descent ends at Mweka Camp (rainforest reappears).

Day 7
Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate
Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate
After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Mweka Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing through Kilimanjaro's cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Our vehicles will be waiting at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to Moshi or Arusha
