Windhoek to Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch Campsite

You’ll be collected from your Windhoek accommodation between 07:30 and 08:00 to begin your journey south through the Kalahari’s striking red sands. Passing through Rehoboth, home of the Baster people, and the small town of Kalkrand, you leave the main road behind and head into the heart of the Kalahari. Unlike the Namib, this fossil desert is greener and alive with diverse flora and fauna.

In the late afternoon, enjoy a scenic open-vehicle sunset drive before overnighting at Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch—set on the edge of the Southern Kalahari amid rolling, vegetated dunes. This charming lodge blends traditional safari style with the pioneering spirit of Africa, offering an authentic and unforgettable desert experience.

Canyon Roadhouse Campsite Gondwana Collection Namibia to Kairos Cottage B&B and Coffee Shop

This morning, visit the awe-inspiring Fish River Canyon—one of the world’s largest, stretching 160 km long, 27 km wide, and 550 m deep. Marvel at its dramatic cliffs and vast landscapes from the main viewpoint, capturing unforgettable photos of this ancient geological wonder. After breakfast, we journey west to the coastal town of Lüderitz, known for its German colonial charm, colorful harbor, and cool Atlantic breeze.

Arriving by late afternoon, settle into Kairos Cottage, a cozy guesthouse near Shark Island Lighthouse and Agate Beach. Rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, TVs, and tea/coffee facilities, with breakfast included. Dinner tonight is at your own expense.

Kairos Cottage B&B to Klein-Aus Vista Desert Horse Campsite Gondwana Collection Namibia

Today, we travel from Lüderitz to Aus. There is time to join an optional excursion, a marine trip. You will take a cruise around Lüderitz Bay and, weather permitting, to Halifax Island to see the jackass penguins. You can explore Lüderitz town with its traditional German architecture. We will take a drive out to Diaz Point to see the birdlife, hopefully a few seals, and the Stone Cross replica, originally erected by the Portuguese mariner Bartholomew Diaz. Straight after the marine trip, we drive out to Kolmanskop, a desert ghost town about 20km out of Lüderitz. It was built in the 1920s during the diamond rush and was abandoned.

Tonight we sleep at Klein Aus Vista, a private reserve, beautifully located in the Aus Mountain Range (Huib-Hoch-Plateau region). The road takes us through the “forbidden zone”, so named because in years gone by, the alluvial diamonds found in Namibia were simply scattered across the desert. We'll again have time to enjoy the sunset over the mountains.

Klein-Aus Vista Desert Horse Campsite Gondwana Collection Namibia to Sesriem Campsite

Heading north, journey deep into the ancient Namib, passing remote communities, rugged “koppies,” and arid rocky terrain before reaching open savannah and the striking red dunes of the Namib Desert. Arrive at Sesriem Campsite by late afternoon to watch the desert glow at sunset. Perfectly located at the Sossusvlei park gate, the campsite offers easy access to Sesriem Canyon and breathtaking dune views. Enjoy a night under star-filled skies with the sounds of geckos and jackals, then rise early to climb a dune and witness sunrise over the desert—a truly unforgettable experience.

Day 6

Sesriem Campsite

Sesriem Campsite

A pre-dawn start is essential this morning as we want to catch the soft light of the sunrise in the desert. After passing through Sesriem, the gateway to the dunes, and driving into the heart of the dune field, we reach Sossusvlei itself by walking the last 5km through the dunes. The walk is like nothing else. In the cool of the morning, with soft sunlight just beginning to play over the dunes, it creates a sharp light and shadow contrast across the whole desert. Ancient mineral pans, stunted camelthorn trees and the chance of seeing a gemsbok or maybe an ostrich, make the photo opportunities perfect.

We spend the morning in and around Sossusvlei, also visiting Dune 45. As the day wears on, we return to Sesriem for lunch to escape the heat of the afternoon. As the day cools off in the late afternoon, we will take a short excursion to the Sesriem Canyon.

Best Time To Visit May to September (Less hot)
