Day 2

Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

Extending over 260sqkm, Lake Mburo is Uganda’s smallest savannah park. The park is an underrated gem, usually bypassed by many because of its low count on the Big Five, but it is increasingly becoming an overnight spot to break the long journey between the southwest and Kampala. You'll drive about 4 hours to the park, check in at our lodge. Later in the afternoon, you'll go for a walk in the park. The walk gets you close to animals like impalas, zebras, buffaloes, and giraffes as you walk with a ranger. You'll return to the lodge for an overnight stay.

Today, you'll be unusually watching wildlife, not the traditional game drive, but an exploration on 2 wheels. You'll do a 2-hour safari at your own pace using mountain bikes and go off the beaten tracks and look for wildlife, and learn more details that are missed while in vehicles. Afterward, you'll transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

The zig-zag outline of the Virunga volcanoes dominates the southern part of the Kigezi Landscape. Today, after breakfast, you'll ascend through the contrasting vegetation and search for the golden monkeys. The golden monkeys are the second-best thing to do at Mgahinga after gorillas. After seeing these primates, you'll drive to Lake Mutanda and have a cruise on the lake before returning to the lodge.

The Batwa are a minority ethnic group in Uganda, and Mgahinga is the epitome of the trail. You'll visit the Old People of the Forest, walk with them on a trail through the park as they show you how they used to survive in the park before eviction, and walk up the Ngarama caves. After the walk, you'll drive to the lodge for lunch. In case of a transfer, you'll transfer to the lodge.

Uganda’s single most important tourist hotspot is the 331 sq km Bwindi forest that covers a rugged landscape of steep hills and valleys abutting the Congolese border south of the Ishasha sector. The forest provides shelter to some of Africa’s diverse mammalian fauna that includes half the population of mountain gorillas, and the main activity here is gorilla tracking. Today, you'll drive to the head offices of Bwindi Forest Park for orientation and a briefing before you hit the trails for an amazing encounter with the mountain gorillas. The activity can last 3-8 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas. When you return, you'll receive your certificates and return to the lodge.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is in the north of Bwindi. The first sector (Buhoma) is just 62km, but Rushaga is a far distance. Today, after breakfast, you'll drive to Queen Elizabeth’s national park, Ishasha sector, which is famous for tree-climbing lions. You'll drive through the eastern part of Bwindi, in Ruhija, and arrive at the lodge in the afternoon. You'll have an overnight and await the morning for adventure and search for the tree-climbing lions.

Ishasha is somewhat removed from the rest of the park and is famous for tree-climbing lions. Mostly those intent on seeing the lions up in the tree, it usually happens during the heat of the day. After breakfast, you'll set out for a drive and look out for the tree-climbing lions (main target) and also see what the south plains have to give. After, you'll drive north for a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel.

Today is a big game day in Queen Elizabeth National Park. You'll have an early breakfast and drive to the Kasenyi plains for a morning game drive. The area is crisscrossed by a labyrinthine network of wildlife viewing roads in the short-grass savannah. You'll drive through in search of resident lion prides, leopards, elephants, herds of kobs, buffaloes, singing birds, and others of the 95 mammals in the park. Afterward, you'll leave for Kibale Forest. You'll have lunch en route.

Chimpanzee Tracking and Bigodi Wetland Walk

The highlight of any visit to Kibale is the chimpanzee tracking excursion that leaves twice a day at 8.00 am and 2:00 pm. You shall opt for a morning walk in the forest for chimpanzee tracking, and this will be after your breakfast. Chimpanzees are well habituated and allow approach within 8-10m of individuals that will be feeding and others grooming. Guides will lead you after the briefing takes a maximum of about 4 hours, including the 1 hour you are allowed for watching. You can carry your packed lunch. After lunch, you'll have an afternoon walk at Bigodi community walk, which will give you an understanding of the communities around the park and also chances for watching the life outside the park.

You'll have an early breakfast and check out for our transfer to Murchison Falls National Park. It is a long drive but scenic as it goes through the floor of the rift valley past Lake Albert. You'll have lunch en route. Depending on your arrival time, you'll visit the top of the falls. You'll continue to the lodge for an overnight stay.

The bulk of the park’s wildlife is concentrated on the northern bank, and there are established circuits of tracks for game drives. You'll drive through in search of wildlife from the lion prides here, leopards, hippos, elephants, hyenas, kobs, warthogs, among others. Afterward, you'll return to the lodge for lunch, before the boat safari. Boat safaris start from Paraa, following the Victoria Nile east or west. You'll do a 3-hour return launch trip to the base of the falls eastwards along the archetypal stretch of the Nile before docking on a stone bay a few meters away from the gushing waterfall. The wild and birdlife is reliably stunning. You'll meet your guide before going to the lodge.

After breakfast, you'll check out and drive to Kampala. You'll have a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for on-foot rhino tracking. Rhinos are vulnerable, and the only place in Uganda where one can see them in a wild setting is at this sanctuary. You'll have a guided walk and encounter the rhinos. After having lunch, you'll continue to Kampala, arriving late evening.
