Day 1

Your journey starts with a morning flight from Dar es Salaam to Kilimanjaro, where your guide is waiting to meet you. From there it's a short drive to Arusha National Park, one of the only parks in northern Tanzania where you're allowed to explore on foot.

So this is where you begin, the old way: a guided walking safari alongside an armed ranger, moving quietly through forest and open glade beneath the slopes of Mount Meru. On foot, the bush comes alive at a different pace, you read tracks in the dirt, follow birdsong, and come upon giraffe, buffalo, zebra and the acrobatic black-and-white colobus monkey at eye level rather than from a vehicle.

In the afternoon you continue by 4×4 on a game drive around the Momela Lakes, where flamingo gather in the shallows, before settling in for the night near Arusha already with the feeling of having truly been in the wild, not just driven through it.

Day 2

Tarangire national park

Tarangire national park

After breakfast you head south to Tarangire, a park defined by its ancient baobabs and the largest elephant herds in northern Tanzania. In the dry season the Tarangire River pulls in great numbers of game, and the day's drive brings elephant, zebra and wildebeest, with a good chance of lion and the park's tree-climbing pythons and big cats. You'll pause for lunch in the park and continue exploring into the late afternoon, before exiting the park make your way lodge located in Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Depart Karatu in the morning after a hearty breakfast and make your way to the famous Serengeti National Park. En-route to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, you will have a chance to see some views of the Ngorongoro Crater before reaching the Serengeti gate. After lunch, you will head out on an afternoon game drive to look for some of the wild game before sunset and dinner at the Camp.

A full day to give the Serengeti the time it deserves. You set out early, when the plains are coolest and the predators are still active, with a picnic breakfast so nothing interrupts the morning. There's no schedule to keep your guide reads the landscape and the day unfolds with it, whether that means following a pride on the hunt or simply sitting with a herd at a waterhole. You return to camp at dusk, unhurried, beneath an enormous sky.

Day 5

Ngorongoro crater

Ngorongoro crater

At first light you make for the Ngorongoro Crater, descending some 600 metres into a collapsed volcano that holds a complete world of its own. On the crater floor you may find black rhino, lion, hippo and elephant, with flamingo colouring the shallow lakes pink one of the densest gatherings of wildlife anywhere in Africa. After a leisurely lunch you ascend the rim and drive back to Arusha, where a comfortable bed and a hot shower await after your days in the bush.
