6-Day Kilimanjaro Trekking to Summit

Pick up from hotel Arusha to Marangu gate and hike to Mandara hut

We will pick you up at your hotel in Arusha and transfer to the Marangu gate. This will be the starting point of our expedition to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Today we will hike through the beautiful rainforest for approximately 3 hours to Mandara Hut. Our chef will prepare you a delicious meal and we will stay here overnight.

Mandara hut (2720m) to Horombo hut (3720m)

From Mandara you will walk along the short stretch of forest, to the base of the Maundi Crater then emerge into the moorland. At this point you can decide to make a short, but recommended detour to scramble up the rim of the Maundi Crater for your first really impressive view of the Kibo Crater. The open moorland provides you with time to see Kilimanjaro's most spectacular plants, our guides will point these out to you. After about 6 hours from here you reach the Horombo hut, where you will have hot washing water, a hearty meal and a good night’s rest.

Acclimatization – The Zebra Rocks (3980m) & back to the Horombo Hut (3720m)

The purpose of an acclimatization day is to get our bodies used to high altitudes. We highly recommend it as it will assist with acclimatization. After a relaxed breakfast, we go on a 2 to 4-hour hike to the 3,980 m high zebra rocks. The distinctive black and white stripes give the rock formation its name. A warm lunch awaits us on our return to the Horombo Hut. In the afternoon we can relax and recharge our batteries for the next day’s hike. Overnight in Horombo Hut.

Horombo Hut (3720m) to Kibo Hut (4720m)

Today’s stage is long and demanding, although there are no steep climbs. The hike is 11km and you'll see the nature change from Moorland to Alpine dessert. You will clearly feel the height and thus the thinning air. We will have the Mawenzi and Kibo summits in view almost the whole long way. This almost vegetation-free plateau connects the summit of the Kibo with the Mawenzi. Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut and should be reached in about 5 to 6 hours. After an invigorating lunch, we can relax a little, have dinner around 5:00 p.m. and go to sleep around 7:00 p.m. The ascent to the summit starts at midnight, so it is important that we recover well beforehand. Because the ascent to the summit is a little longer from this route, it is very important that we eat and drink enough and recharge our batteries for the long day on the summit. Remember to have at least 3 liters of warm drinking water prepared by the crew.

Kibo Hut (4720 m) to Uhuru Summit (5895 m) - back to Horombo Hut

Today is the “big day” of the summit stage. After a hot tea we start at midnight when the lava ash is still frozen and easy to walk. We start the ascent to the summit with our headlamp joined by the light of millions of stars. At sunrise, we reach Gilman’s Point (5715 m) on the crater rim. It's possible to experience strong winds here. After about an hour we reach Stella Point (5756 m). Another 1 to 2 hours ascent along the crater ridge leads us to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Here we see Kilimanjaro in all its glory and enjoy the 360 ° view over the landscape in the early morning. We are now on the “roof of Africa”. After a small celebration of this major achievement, we will start our descend back to Kibo Hut, where we will arrive at lunchtime. After a warm meal and a break of about 1 hour, we make our way back to the Horombo Hut (3,720 m), where we will stay overnight. The total hike will take about 14 hours today.

Horombo Hut to Marangu gate

After an early and well-deserved breakfast, you will continue a 6 hour descent passing Mandara hut, and down to the Marangu gate. You will see the nature coming back to life, and the sun warm your skin. Those climbers who reached Gillman’s point, Stella Point or Uhuru Peak will receive their certificates in a small ceremony. After we say goodbye to the whole crew, we will transfer you back to your hotel.
