Often called the Eighth Natural Wonder of the World, this massive volcanic caldera is the largest intact of its kind on Earth. Formed over 2 million years ago, its 600-meter-high walls enclose a rich ecosystem spanning 19 km, including acacia forests, grassy plains, and hippo-filled swamps. The crater is home to over 30,000 animals, such as elephants, flamingos, warthogs, rare black rhinos, and all the big cats. You might even see Maasai herders grazing cattle alongside buffalo and wildebeest. Enjoy lunch at the Hippo Pool picnic site, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. After your adventure, head to Mto wa Mbu for dinner and an overnight stay at the cozy Fig Tree Lodge.
