Day 2
Black Rhinos of Mkomazi National Park
Black Rhinos of Mkomazi National Park
Mkomazi is one of the least-visited parks in northern Tanzania – quieter and drier than the better-known circuit, with a remote feel that reflects its name: in the local language, Mkomazi means "water for one spoon." Wildlife is less dense than in Tarangire or Ngorongoro, but what you find here tends to be harder to find elsewhere.
The centrepiece is the black rhino sanctuary – one of the more serious conservation projects in East Africa. The rhinos are closely protected, a response to the poaching that brought the species close to extinction, and the visit takes you through the reserve in an open vehicle at close range.
A walk around the broader area turns up mongoose, hyrax, vervet monkey and various lizards – the kind of detail that rewards a slower pace.

Day 3
Wildlife, Birds, and Untouched Beauty
Wildlife, Birds, and Untouched Beauty
Mkomazi covers over 3,200 square kilometres, stretching from the Pare Mountains to the border with Kenya's Tsavo West – and wildlife moves freely across it. Elephant and lion occasionally cross from Tsavo; buffalo, giraffe, zebra and various antelope are resident in the valley. The gerenuk is worth looking for – a long-necked antelope adapted to browsing upright on its hind legs, and not commonly seen in other northern parks.
The elephant watering hole is an unpredictable stop – the timing of arrivals is never fixed, which is part of what makes it worth pausing at. For birders, the park records over 400 species: eagles, vultures, hoopoe and glossy starling among them, and guinea fowl reliably scattered across the roads.

Day 4
Tracking Shadows - Rare Sightings in Mkomazi
Tracking Shadows - Rare Sightings in Mkomazi
Another day in Mkomazi opens up what the first two hint at. Waterholes and open plains reward patience – lion moving toward water, young antelope on alert at the edges, giraffe sparring in the slow, deliberate way they do. The park carries around 80 recorded species, and the antelope diversity alone is worth the time: impala, hartebeest, oryx, eland, lesser kudu and Grant's gazelle are all present.
In a park this size and this quiet, the drives feel different from the busier northern circuit. Things appear without announcement.
