Arusha to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Transfer from Arusha to Marangu Gate
Your journey begins with an early morning departure from Arusha (around 7:00–8:00 am) for a transfer to Marangu Gate, approximately 120 km away (3.5–4 hours by road). Upon arrival at Marangu Gate (1,870 m / 6,135 ft), you will complete registration with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities, meet your mountain crew—guides, porters, and cook—receive your climbing permit, and sign the park register.
From here, the trek begins through lush rainforest, where you may encounter blue monkeys and a variety of birdlife. The day concludes with an overnight stay at Mandara Hut.

Day 2
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Start the day hiking through the last stretch of montane rainforest within 30–60 minutes, the forest opens into heathland and moorland. You’ll notice a change in vegetation—shrubs, giant lobelias, and groundsels replace tall trees If skies are clear, you’ll start to see Mawenzi Peak and possibly Kibo Peak in the distance. The trail becomes drier, more exposed, and rockier. Climb through heath and moorland zones with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 3
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The trail leaves the moorland zone and enters the alpine desert—a dry, rocky, and wind-swept environment. Vegetation becomes sparse, consisting mainly of small lichens and alpine grasses. Along the way, you’ll enjoy dramatic views of both Mawenzi (sharp and rugged) and Kibo (smooth and dome-like).
You will continue trekking through the alpine desert as the landscape becomes increasingly barren. Upon arrival at camp, rest early in preparation for the summit attempt. In the evening, your guide will brief you about the summit push to Uhuru Peak, which begins around 11:00 pm–12:00 am. Before going to sleep, prepare your gear, snacks, water, and warm layers. You will be woken late at night for the final ascent in the dark.

This is the summit attempt, you'll start in darkness with headlamps, climbing slowly in freezing temperatures. The air is very thin expect slow progress and short, deliberate steps ("pole pole"). Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim is the first milestone. Reaching it is already a major achievement. After Gilman’s, you walk along the crater rim to Stella Point (5,756 m).
You’ll likely see the sunrise here, an unforgettable moment with views of glaciers and the crater. This section is a gentle but exhausting incline due to the extreme altitude. Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) is the highest point in Africa. You’ll take photos at the famous sign, enjoy the views, and then begin your descent back to Horombo for a well-earned rest.
