Day 1

Drive to the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru (about 2 hours including a stop to get permits at Marangu). After signing in and preparing the porters, you will begin the hike on a wide path that winds through fields of maize and potatoes before entering pine forest. The track then starts to climb consistently but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife. The forest begins to thin out and the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone with extensive views over the Kenyan plains.

Day 2

The morning hike is a steady climb toward Second Cave, offering wide open views of Kilimanjaro’s Kibo peak and the striking Eastern Ice Fields along the crater rim. The gradual ascent allows time to adjust to the altitude while enjoying the beauty of the alpine scenery unfolding with every step.

Day 3
Second Cave - Kikelewa Camp

Hike across open moorland on a quieter trail leading toward the striking spires of Mawenzi. The path offers wide views and a peaceful atmosphere. Tonight’s camp sits in a protected valley, surrounded by dramatic scenery and towering giant Senecios—plants unique to the high altitudes of Kilimanjaro.

Day 4
Kikelewa Camp - Mawenzi Tarn Hut

A short but steep climb up grassy slopes is rewarded by superb views. Leave the vegetation behind shortly before reaching the next camp at Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The afternoon will be free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.

Day 5
Mawenzi Tarn Hut - Kibo Hut

Cross the lunar desert of the 'Saddle' between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo campsite, located at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Afterward, the day is dedicated to rest, allowing climbers to prepare for the final, early-morning ascent to the summit, ensuring they're well-rested for the challenge ahead.

Day 6
Kibo Hut - Summit - Horombo Hut

Begin your summit climb early, tackling steep scree or snow to reach Gilman’s Point (5700m/18,700ft) on the crater rim. From there, ascend to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, with breathtaking views at every step. Capture the moment with a summit photo before descending to Kibo for lunch and rest. The challenging climb starts in the dark, requiring headlamps and warm layers. Stay positive, move slowly, and you'll succeed!

Day 7
Horombo Hut – Mandara – Marangu Gate - hotel

After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). Kilimanjaro Unforgettable vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour).
