Day 1

Nairobi to Aberdare – Into the Misty Forests

Nairobi to Aberdare – Into the Misty Forests

Leave the city bustle behind as you ascend into the cool, emerald highlands of Aberdare. En route, stop in Sagana for a warm Kenyan coffee and breathtaking views of the Tana River or a similar place (your guide will let you know).

At Aberdare Country Club or The Ark Lodge, check in and unwind to birdsong and misty mountain breezes. An afternoon game drive within the park introduces you to forest elephants, bushbuck, and possibly a shy leopard slipping through the undergrowth. Tonight, sleep surrounded by the stillness of the forest and the distant echo of waterfalls.

Arrive in time for lunch, rest, then head out for your first sunset game drive. The dry landscape glows with ochre light, elephants graze under doum palms, and Samburu warriors wave as you pass. The evening ends with a fire-lit dinner beneath a sky spilling stars.

Samburu – The Realm of the Special Five

Wake to the calls of hornbills and the soft rustling of doum palms. Set off after breakfast for a full-day game drive through Samburu’s unique semi-arid wilderness. You’re in search of the “Samburu Special Five”—Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk.

Stop for a picnic lunch beneath an acacia tree before continuing your search. In the late afternoon, visit a Samburu cultural village, where colorful beadwork, proud traditions, and warm storytelling connect you to Kenya’s rich heritage. Tonight, sit under the stars and feel how vast and sacred this land truly is.

Samburu – Conservation Visit to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

Start the day slow. After breakfast, take a scenic 2.5-hr drive through dry highlands to Reteti — a community-run sanctuary rescuing and rewilding orphaned baby elephants. Witness feeding time, watch them play, and hear stories of second chances told by local keepers. The experience is emotional, grounding, and deeply inspiring. Return to Samburu in time for a quiet afternoon by the river or an optional sunset drive. Tonight’s dinner is a farewell to Samburu’s dust and wonder.

After breakfast, drive 3.5 hours south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Break the trip with a stop at Nanyuki town’s Java House or a similar place (your guide will let you know) a clean, safe spot for coffee, snacks, and restrooms.

Arrive at Ol Pejeta just in time for lunch and check-in. Later, explore the sanctuary on an afternoon game drive—home to the Big 5, but most movingly, the last two northern white rhinos. You'll also visit the only chimpanzee sanctuary in Kenya, where you’ll witness their intelligence and stories of survival. The experience is powerful a reminder of what’s at stake and why wild spaces must endure.
