Day 1

Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve

We’ll meet and great you early in the morning before departing for the Masai Mara National Reserve, one of the few places left on earth where wildlife still lives comparatively undisturbed and in numbers that once roamed the plains and forests all over Africa. As the northern tip of the vast Serengeti ecosystem, the Mara hosts the spectacular seasonal Great Migration of thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and attendant predators. Arrive in time for lunch, followed by an evening game drive.

Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve

After breakfast, you will enjoy a full-day game drive with a packed lunch provided. The Masai Mara is well known for its black-maned lions, abundant resident wildlife, and is one of the few places where it is possible to see the “Big Five” during a single morning’s game drive. Many of the cheetahs are so accustomed to vehicles that they may seek shelter from the hot sun beneath them, and some even climb onto the roof for a better view of prospective prey. For bird enthusiasts, almost 500 species have been recorded, including 16 species of eagle, many hawks and falcons, six species of vulture, eight species of stork, four species of bustard (including the Kori bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird), and nine species of sunbird.

After an early breakfast, you will drive to Lake Nakuru National Park, which is known all over the world for its flamingoes. The lake is alkaline and recognized as one of the natural wonders of the world. Lake Nakuru is now also a rhino sanctuary, home to over 40 black rhinos and more than 60 white rhinos, though the flamingoes remain the park’s main attraction. At times, nearly two million flamingoes can be present, forming a breathtaking deep pink band around the lake’s edge. You will arrive in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive.

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, you will begin the early morning drive to Lake Naivasha, the highest and most beautiful of the Rift Valley lakes. At 1,910 meters (6,200 feet), its fresh waters are fringed with dense clumps of papyrus, once used by ancient Egyptians to make paper. Kingfishers perch on the papyrus, while herons hide within it in search of food. Lake Naivasha is a popular bird-watching destination, with over 400 recorded species. It is also a favored weekend retreat for Nairobi residents, who come to sail, water ski, and fish. Due to the lake’s high altitude, the water is too cold for crocodiles, but hippos can be found in its waters. Along the lakeshore, vineyards produce grapes for the country’s emerging wine industry.

Amboseli National Park lies due south of Nairobi, with much of its landscape consisting of a dry, ancient lakebed and fragile grassland interspersed with patches of acacia woodland. In the southern area, small rocky volcanic hills rise from the plains, while around the Ol Tukai swamp, the vegetation is lush with yellow-barked acacias and phoenix palms.
