As the site of Uganda's main international airport, the small but historic town of Entebbe is the obvious springboard for travel elsewhere in Uganda. We always enjoy this appealingly low-rise town, with its sprawling colonial-era golf course, lovely botanical garden alive with tropical birds and monkeys, and leafy setting onthe shore of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest inland sea.

Day 2

Today we visit Mabamba Swamp, a Ramsar wetland known for its aquatic birdlife. Gliding through the papyrus in a small boat piloted by a local guide, our main objective is to locate the localized shoebill. Expect to see a wide range of other species including African pygmy goose, saddle-billed stork and various herons, egrets and ducks.

Known for its poignant geographic location where the Nile River exits Lake Victoria, Jinja is a large and agreeably green town that doubles as an important center of NGO activity and the urban hub of Uganda's rafting industry. You'll have so much fun as we take you quad biking. Apart from being an enjoyable way to get around, you'll also get to go a lot further than you could if you were on foot.

One of the things we like most about Rafiki Lodge Sipi is that you don't need to stray beyond the balcony toenjoy superb views of the largest and most impressive of the three waterfalls collectively known as Sipi Falls. Our next stop is Moroto, a small and unassuming town that nonetheless serves as the largest urban outpost in the vast badlands of Karamoja. The town has an attractive setting at the base of Mt Moroto, which rises to 3,084m on the eastern skyline. When you stay at Mount Moroto Hotel, you're in a good position to enjoy this leg of your trip.

Our guests come to Kidepo Valley National Park for the wildlife, which includes lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and zebra, but most are equally blown away by the mountainous scenery and sense of being miles off any beaten track. Kidepo's bird checklist of 470 species includes several recorded nowhere else in Uganda
(most famously, East Africa’s only wild population ofthe spectacular rose-ringed parakeet). It’s one of the best places anywhere to see the long-limbed, ground- dwelling patas monkey.

We return to the remote wilderness of Kidepo Valley National Park. You'll be joining us in Kidepo Valley National Park for a guided game drive. Kidepo also boasts unique species like the Cheetah, aardwolf, bat-eared fox.

Today we head to Murchison Falls National Park, whichis Uganda's largest conservation area and one of itsmost rewarding overall safari destinations. Wildlife viewing activities focuson the Nile River, a mesmerizing tropical waterway that supports impressive concentrations of hippo, crocodile and aquatic birds, and attracts plenty of other thirsty wildlife, from elephants and buffaloes to giraffes and antelope. The park is named after its scenic highlight an explosive waterfall formed by the Nile as it siphons through a narrow crack in the Rift Valley escarpment.

Kibale National Park is best known for its population of around 1000 chimpanzees, man's closest genetic relative. The park is home to a dozen other primate species, including Uganda mangabey, a type ofmonkey that is unique to Uganda and difficult to see anywhere other than Kibale. It supports a dazzling forestbirdlife, with 370species recorded, rangingfrom the out rageously colorful great blue turaco to the secretive green-breasted pitta.

Time to get into safari mode as you enter Queen ElizabethNationalPark, a savannah-dominated reserve known for its conspicuous populations of lion, elephant, buffalo and other iconic African creatures. There are also hippos on the pretty Kazinga Channel, a flat and narrow waterway that connects Lake Edwardand Lake George within eyeshot of the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountains, as well as rainforests alive with chimps and monkeys, and crater lakes tinged pink by flocks of flamingo. Indeed, this is possibly the most biodiverse national park anywhere in East Africa.

By going on an evening game drive is one of the highlights of any safari. This is when temperatures cool, the light becomes softer and the wildlife begins to get active. Back in Queen Elizabeth National Park, You couldn't get more of an African feel than Enjojo Lodge's location in a steamy tract of palm-fringed swampland. We love the stilted en-suite cottages, which come complete with walk-in nets, bright ethnic decor and private terraces staring out into the jungle. Because the lodge borders Queen Elizabeth National Park’s Ishasha sector, you should keep an eye open for elephants and other wildlife coming to drink at the
waterhole infront of the restaurant.

Lake Mutanda has a beautiful location in the heart of the Gorilla Highlands. Early Morning Game Drive, QueenElizabeth NationalPark. Put on some warm clothes and enjoy an early morning game drive. This is the perfect time to experience the wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit. The light issoft and warm – perfect for photography – and most animals are out and about, and active. If you’re not an early riser, you’ll definitely want to make an exception here.

Viewed as you approach the park boundary, the forested mountainsides of BwindiImpenetrable National Park stand in magnificent contrast to the surrounding cultivated hills. Once inside the park, expect a sensory overload of sounds, smells and sights you could only experience in a pristine African jungle. Even without any wildlife, Bwindi would be an amazing place to visit, but the presence of a diverse forest fauna– most notably the endangered mountain gorilla butalso 10 other primate and 350 bird species – has made this Unesco World Heritage Site one of Africa's undisputed top destinations.

As its name suggests, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a key strong hold for the mountain gorilla, and one of only four places worldwide where this charismatic ape can be observed in the wild. Despite being Uganda’s smallest national park, it has an impressive altitudespan, ranging from 2,227m at the entrance gate to 4,127m at the summit of Muhabura, the tallest of three volcanoes situated within its boundaries. There are no roads inside the park, but its varied habitats, which include cathedralesque bamboostands, dense rainforest and high-altitude moorland, can be explored on various guided foot excursions. Our morning activity entails tracking goldenmonkeys in the Virunga Mountains. Named for their striking gold andblackcoats, these playful bamboo-eating monkeys were once widespread in the highland forests of the Albertine Rift Valley, but are now more or less confined to this one mountain range.

Dammed by a lava flow 8 000 years ago, Bunyonyi is a flooded rivervalley thatextends for 25km from north to southbutis nowhere more than5km wide. The absence of hippos and crocodiles means swimming is safe; it’s also resulted in an unusually dense population of otters, which are often seen from the shore. A great beach chill-out destination, Bunyonyi also offers plenty of walking and kayaking opportunities to keep active travelers busy.

Lake Mburo National Park is a perfect stopover when driving between Entebbe and the Gorilla Highlands but also a thoroughly worthwhile safari destination in its own right. The lake for which the park is named supports healthy populations of hippo, crocodile and various waterbirds (including the elusive African finfoot), while the surrounding acacia woodland ishome to buffalo, zebra, giraffe and a wide variety of antelope. Leopards are also seen with increasing frequency towards dusk.
