The day is packed with incredible contrasts: from the hypnotic bubbling of the Sulfur Lake to the stark, beautiful process of traditional salt mining. Experience the rhythm of the desert on a camel caravan adventure before enjoying a refreshing lunch in the oasis village of Afdera. The climax of the day is the hike to the summit of Erta Ale. As night envelops the desert, you will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular sights on Earth: the fiery orange glow of a persistent lava lake, churning and spitting within the volcanic crater. We spend a magical night camping on the volcano, surrounded by the profound silence of the desert.

Awake early for a spectacular dawn. We drive to the mythical Lake Afrera, a salt lake lying 100m below sea level. Here, you can float effortlessly in its super-buoyant waters and admire the surrounding red salt mountains at sunrise. Next, we venture to the hydrothermal field of Dallol, the lowest land volcano on Earth. Trek through an incredible, alien landscape of vibrant yellow sulfur, brilliant green acid pools, and towering white salt formations. This kaleidoscope of colors, formed by intense volcanic activity, is a true natural marvel. Our journey concludes as we drive to Mekele for your late afternoon flight, marking the end of an unforgettable expedition.
