Ithala Game Reserve lies in the mountainous northern KwaZulu-Natal interior, 100km/62mi inland of the Indian Ocean as the crow flies. By road, it stands about 5km/3mi north of the small town of Louwsburg and 385km/239mi (5½ hours’ drive*) north of Durban. Easily reached in any car, it is usually a stop on a longer guided or tour.
Most people visiting South Africa fly to Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) or Cape Town International Airport (CPT). It’s also possible to fly directly to King Shaka International Airport (DUR), which lies 35km/22mi north of Durban along the main road to Ithala, or to book a connecting domestic flight from Johannesburg or Cape Town. Car rental is available at all airports.
