Lewa Wildlife Conservancy offers good wildlife viewing throughout the year, but the best wildlife viewing overall is from July to September. The months from December to February are also very good. Heavy rain (most likely in November or April) can interfere with your safari, reducing visibility and turning some trails to mud. The reserve’s lodges are closed in April and November.

June to September Dry Season

  • Days are usually warm and sunny, with little rain
  • Wildlife watching is easier as animals gather at permanent water sources
  • Vegetation is thinner, so visibility of animals is better
  • The reserve gets relatively busy, although not by the standards of Kenya’s national parks
  • There can be a lot of dust in the sky, which reduces visibility

October to May Wet Season

  • The reserve is less busy and low-season rates might apply
  • Bird watching is excellent and migratory birds are present
  • There are many newborn animals
  • Scenery is lush and you can enjoy stunning views of Mt Kenya when the clouds lift
  • There are many overcast days
  • The grass is long, which makes smaller animals harder to spot
  • Off-road driving might not be possible after heavy rain
