Amazing experience with Shayona Safaris & Tours
5/5

We had an amazing safari experience with Shayona Safaris and Tours while travelling with friends. From the beginning, everything was well organised and clearly communicated.

Our guide, Ndaki, was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to go out of his way to make sure we had the best possible experience. His knowledge of the wildlife and the areas we visited made the safari even more enjoyable.

The itinerary was explained clearly before the trip, and we really appreciated being given different options so we could choose an itinerary that suited us best. Throughout the whole experience, communication was smooth and the support from the team was very good.

Overall, we had a great time and would definitely recommend Shayona Safaris and Tours to anyone looking for a well-organised, enjoyable and memorable safari experience. A big thank you to Ndaki and the whole team!

A Once In a Lifetime Disappointment
2/5

I'm really shocked by all of the 5 star reviews. For an experience that costs so much money, I was dismayed at the barely adequate level of service that was provided. Did we see animals? Sure. But they are had to miss and there HAS to be better operators to go with.

Some tips: Make sure your guide speaks English well. Ask about the quality and presentation of lunches you'll be provided while you're out on game drives. If possible, book a tour that provides a guide AND a driver. They are two different skill-sets. Don't over-extend yourself trying to see too many areas. You don't want to spend more time driving from park to park than seeing animals. We felt that Shayona failed in all of these areas for us.

First, our guide (Ndika) was awful. For my standards, he barely spoke English. He couldn't answer to our satisfaction our questions about the animals or numerous other questions that arose on the tour. We gave up after a while, which significantly diminished how much we could've learned through the experience. Also, he had horrible body odor. Admittedly, that may not be a big deal to some people, but when you're stuck in a vehicle for 4-5 hours a day for multiple days it's a miserable experience. We brought this up with Ajay when we first met our guide, but the situation was never resolved. Ndika also drove like a mad-man, over-taking vehicles like he was on a race and at one point, while driving up a narrow cliff-side road as we entered Ngorongora park, one of our rear wheels started to slide off the edge of the road (cliffside). He had to do a crazy drifting maneuver to right the vehicle. I've never been so scared in my life.

Beyond that, as a tour operator, you expect them to apply their expertise and experience to help ensure a pleasant tour. Nope. One small example was our daily lunch. Most other tour groups had picnic blankets to drape over the picnic tables which, understandably had bird droppings on them. They had food that was stored in hot or cold packs. Our lunches, which had perishable items, were kept on the front seat with the driver. There were no picnic blankets so we had to sit at tables covered in bird droppings. The cooler in the vehicle didn't even have ice or dry ice to keep drinks cold during our long outings. These are small things, but you'd think that an experienced company would have figured out these basic things to ensure a good experience for their guests. Remember, these tours costs thousands and thousands of dollars.

The tour organization was also very half-hazard. Flight itineraries weren't read in advance, so we were left scrambling at the last minute for lodging when we arrived. As mentioned earlier, our guide, didn't seem to know what was on each day's itinerary from one day to the next. Most critically, the itinerary Shayona provided was completely impractical. We spent WAY too much time driving from one place to another when we could've spent that time looking at animals. The operator should've used his expertise and experience to tell us if we needed more time or needed to cut down our wish-list of places to see, but he didn't. There was no guidance that could've made for a better trip. To be honest, there wasn't much communication leading up to our trip, which should've been a red-flag.

Sadly, this was a once-in-a-lifetime trip so there are no do overs for us. What should've been an amazing experience was ultimately a huge disappointment. Choose your operator and guide wisely. If I were you, I wouldn't choose Shayona.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are genuinely sorry to hear that your experience did not meet the standards we strive to provide, particularly as we understand how much a safari of this nature means to our guests.

That said, we would like to clarify a few points for the benefit of future travellers reading this review.

Ndaki is one of our most experienced guides and has been with us for many years. He is a highly experienced, multilingual guide who speaks fluent English and German, as well as French and Mandarin. He has received numerous positive reviews from guests for his knowledge, professionalism and ability to make safari experiences enjoyable. We were therefore particularly concerned by the comments regarding his communication and immediately discussed the concerns with him.

Ndaki also shared with us that, during the safari, there were occasions when he felt he was being spoken to kindly, while at other times he felt the behaviour towards him became aggressive. We mention this not to create further disagreement, but to provide a balanced account of the experience from both sides. Our guides spend several days travelling closely with guests, and mutual respect and communication are important in making the experience enjoyable for everyone.

We were particularly surprised by the comment regarding an unpleasant odour from Ndaki. Our guides have always maintained a high standard of personal hygiene. When this was brought to our attention, Ndaki immediately checked the vehicle to investigate the source of the smell. He found that a bag of prawns, which had been purchased by you during the safari, had been left inside the vehicle and forgotten. This was the source of the odour. We appreciate that an unpleasant smell inside a safari vehicle can make a long journey uncomfortable, and we regret that this affected your experience; however, we felt it was important to clarify the actual source of the smell.

Interestingly, when we subsequently explained that we had raised the matter with Ndaki and asked him to confirm what had happened, we were questioned as to why we had informed our own guide about the complaint. We find this difficult to reconcile with the subsequent questioning of our company regarding the organisation of the tour and the services we provide. As a tour operator, it is our responsibility to investigate concerns raised by our guests, speak with our staff and establish the facts. This is precisely what we did in this instance.

We take the allegation regarding unsafe driving especially seriously. The safety of our guests is always our highest priority, and our guides are instructed to drive responsibly and within the conditions of the roads and parks. The approach into the Ngorongoro Crater includes steep sections, narrow roads and numerous sharp bends, which can understandably feel uncomfortable, particularly from inside a safari vehicle. However, our guides are professional drivers and would never knowingly drive in a manner that puts our guests at risk.

Regarding the length of the journeys, we would also like to clarify that a detailed itinerary and day-by-day safari plan were provided in advance and were confirmed with your partner before the safari commenced. The safari was therefore planned according to an itinerary that had been reviewed and agreed upon beforehand.

It is also important to understand that Tanzania’s national parks and conservation areas are vast. Accommodation is intentionally located in different areas, often considerable distances apart, in order to limit development within the parks and preserve the feeling of being immersed in nature. Travelling between different parks, areas and lodges is therefore an inherent part of many safari itineraries. We always try to structure our itineraries as efficiently as possible, but some driving is unavoidable when visiting multiple areas.

We also acknowledge that your itinerary involved a considerable amount of driving. Unfortunately, part of the original safari had to be adjusted because you were not feeling well during the trip, which affected the schedule and resulted in some longer journeys. We understand that this may have made the travelling more tiring than anticipated.

Regarding the vehicle cooler, it is important to clarify that the cooler provided in our safari vehicles is designed to keep items cool; it is not a freezer. Ice and dry ice are also not consistently available at properties and camps within the national parks, which can make maintaining very low temperatures throughout an entire game-drive day difficult. Nevertheless, we appreciate your feedback and will continue looking at ways to improve this aspect of our service.

We have been operating safaris for over 10 years and have welcomed guests from all over the world during this time. We are therefore disappointed that your experience did not reflect the standards we aim to provide. At the same time, we believe it is important to provide this context, particularly as several aspects of the review do not reflect what we found when we investigated the concerns raised.

With over 365 reviews on TripAdvisor, the overwhelming majority of which are from guests who have rated their experience as Excellent, we remain very proud of the service our guides and team provide. We do, however, take every criticism seriously because every guest deserves a safe, comfortable and memorable safari.

We sincerely regret that we were unable to provide that experience for you on this occasion and appreciate you bringing your concerns to our attention. We wish you all the best in your future travels.

Awesome safari with very accommodating and nice guide and tour company
5/5

Last year me and four of my friends went on a safari trip with Shayona Safari & Tours. We started in Mwanza very early on Saturday morning and spend one night in the Serengeti National Park. The park is amazing and the amount of animals that you get to see is unbelievable!
I can highly recommend going with this tour company too! The day before our trip we were able to talk with our guide and the company and see the car that we were planning to go in. They made sure to listen to our wishes and we figured a super nice plan together. Our guide was super friendly and knew a lot to tell us about the animals and the surrounding.

Thank you for the amazing time!

Simply amazing.
5/5

We had the best safari experience imaginable, and it was all thanks to Dharminder and Ritesh. From start to finish, everything was exceptional.

Dharminder worked incredibly hard to ensure we saw everything we had hoped for and more. His knowledge of the wildlife, environment, and safari experience is second to none, and his driving skills were outstanding. He went above and beyond to look after us, always making sure we were comfortable and getting the most out of every moment. Thanks to his dedication and expertise, we saw so much more than we ever expected.

A special mention also goes to Ritesh, who planned the trip so well from the very beginning. His knowledge and expertise ensured every aspect of the safari was perfectly organised. He was incredibly accommodating when our requests changed and was always willing to adapt the itinerary to suit our needs, making sure everything ran smoothly and seamlessly.

The entire experience exceeded our expectations, and I honestly can’t speak highly enough of both Dharminder and Ritesh. Not only are they exceptionally good at what they do, but they are also genuinely kind and wonderful people. I would absolutely recommend this safari to anyone, and if I were to do it again, I would specifically request Dharminder again without hesitation.

Thank you both for making our trip such an incredible and memorable experience!

Wonderful Serengeti safari
5/5

We have just completed a wonderful fly-in, fly-out Serengeti safari with Shayona.
They were excellent from the very start. Helping to tailor-make the safari to meet our requirements (thanks, Ajay & Ritesh for all your great advice) including organising a great balloon trip for us. Thanks also to Karim, our driver in Arusha.
Our guide during the safari was Rievo and he made sure that we had an unforgettable experience, getting so close to the amazing animals and ensuring that everything ran smoothly.
We would definitely recommend Shayona
