Day Trips From Maun - Compare 19 Tours
Maun is Botswana’s premier safari gateway town, and even if you’re just passing through, it can still be the starting point for a wonderful day trip into the surrounding area. The main attraction in any excursion from Maun is the Okavango Delta and this will almost certainly be the main focus of any day trip. Whether you’re traveling by road or by air (or a combination of the two), the Okavango Delta is an incredible highlight that you won’t want to miss if you’re in town, even if just for a day. There are, however, other attractions within an easy foray of Maun if you’ve already been out into the Delta.

6 Questions About Day Trips From Maun
Anthony Ham
What day trips are available from Maun?
“Maun is right alongside the Okavango Delta, so it makes sense that the best day trips head into the Delta. There are two ways to do this. One is via a scenic flight with either a small plane or a helicopter – although this will rarely last longer than an hour – and the other is to go by car. To go on a day safari in the Delta, you’re better off flying as it will allow you to combine a scenic flight with some time on the ground. Flying also allows you to be out in the Delta early in the day, maximizing the amount of time you can spend enjoying the landscape and looking for animals. Traveling by road is cheaper, but you won’t be able to get as far, you’ll spend more time getting to and from where you want to go, and you’ll end up looking for animals at the worst time of day, when it’s hot and most animals are not visible. Other possible day trips from Maun include the Shorobe Basket Co-operative, the orphaned elephants at Elephant Haven, and Boro-bonche Ostrich Farm. You could combine all three on a day trip from Maun.”
1Is it worth doing a day trip from Maun?
“Yes, anything you can see on a day trip from Maun will be worth it. Of course, it would be better if you had more time to explore the Okavango Delta, and if you visit the Delta only as a day trip, you may find yourself longing for more. But 1 day in the Delta will always be better than no days in the Delta at all. Or, to put it another way, if we only had one day to spend anywhere in Africa, spending it in the Okavango Delta might just be top of the list. Plan your trip carefully and you’re in for the most wonderful experience.”
2Which animals can I see on a day trip from Maun?
“If your day trip from Maun includes a trip out into the Okavango Delta, you can expect to see lots of animals, although it all depends on where you go. Even on most short day trips into the Delta, you can expect to see elephants and numerous antelope species. You might also see zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and buffalo, although you’d have to be lucky to see all of these on a day trip. Count on seeing lots of birds as well. There are numerous big cats (lions, leopards and cheetahs) in the Delta, but the general rule with big cat sightings is that the longer you are there, the better your chances are of an encounter. This means that seeing them is very often a question of luck. In other words, if you see one of these species on your only day in the Delta, consider yourself very lucky.”
3Can I visit the Okavango Delta from Maun in one day?
“Yes, you can visit the Delta on a day safari from Maun. As mentioned above, this can be done with either an air or a road transfer package. With an air transfer, you should be able to fly deep into the Delta into some fantastic (and sometimes exclusive) wildlife areas. If you leave very early in the morning and return around dusk, you can enjoy a wonderful 1-Day safari. The problem with flying is, of course, the cost, and two flights in a single day can mean quite a costly day trip. If you drive, which is cheaper, you’ll be limited in how far you can go. Driving into the Delta and back in one day usually means heading to the southern, more accessible regions of the Delta. Some of these have excellent wildlife, but they can also be busier with other safari groups. You’ll also be seeing animals during the hotter daylight hours, when most animals are less active – either resting or cooling off in the shade of vegetation and therefore more difficult to see.”
4What is the best time of year for a day trip from Maun?
“The best time to go on a day safari from Maun into the Okavango Delta is during the Dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, you can expect milder temperatures, clear skies and good visibility. These are also the months when water levels are highest (water levels in the Delta depend on rainfall in Angola months before) and the animals are easiest to see. The Delta is lovely and green at this time, and water levels also ensure you can go on a mokoro (traditional wooden dugout canoe). If you’re in the area to see birds, the best months are generally from November to April. Although this is the Wet season, it’s also when thousands of migratory birds arrive in the area from Europe and North Africa. Non-safari day trips can be done at any time of the year. ”
5Is there anything to see in Maun itself?
“Maun doesn’t have a lot of attractions, but there are more than enough worthwhile possibilities to fill a day trip. For a start, Okavango Craft Brewery is an excellent initiative, with tours, a tap room where you can try the local brew, and an attached restaurant. Profits from the brewery also go to helping communities live alongside elephants in the Okavango Delta and Panhandle. Another possibility is a sunset cruise along the Thamalakane River (if water levels permit), while there’s a thriving café and boutique souvenir precinct surrounding (and just inside) the gate to Maun’s small airport.”
