2 travelers on Start dateWhite rhinos were declared locally extinct in Uganda in the 1980s — hunted to zero by poachers over the course of two brutal decades. For over twenty years, Uganda had no rhinos at all. That changed in 2005 and 2006, when the Rhino Fund Uganda and Uganda Wildlife Authority launched one of East Africa’s most ambitious conservation programs: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Today, Ziwa is home to over 30 wild southern white rhinos roaming.
