Rubondo Island is located in the southwestern part of Lake Victoria, in Geita Region, about 150 kilometers west of Mwanza City. The park is an important conservation area, especially for fish and birds. Its waters provide an important breeding ground for fish species such as Tilapia and Nile perch, while the island attracts many migratory birds from different parts of the world. Rubondo Island is particularly famous for its birdlife. The park supports a large number of water birds.
