The rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lie in Ethiopia’s mountainous highlands, about 701 km from Addis Ababa. Carved from solid rock in the 12th–13th centuries under King Gebre Mesqel Lalibela, these eleven medieval churches were intended as a “New Jerusalem” for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. Still active today, they remain one of Ethiopia’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations and remarkable architectural wonders.
