Tsimanampetsotsa National Park is a great birding destination. The large soda lake is home to big flocks of greater and lesser flamingo and lots of other waders. This is the place to look out for the rare Madagascar plover. The spiny forest, on the other hand, is where you can see many dry-country specials such as the comical running coua. Night walks are recommended to pick up some of the nocturnal species.

Best Time for Bird Watching

Bird watching in Tsimanampetsotsa is good throughout the year and many birds can be seen at any time. The Wet season months are best for bird watching as birds tend to be more vocal and active during this time. This is also the time migrants are present. However, these months are very hot and humid. So, as a compromise, the ideal time is perhaps from September to November and in April. Flamingos are mostly resident from April to October.
