Other-worldly landscapes and lemurs
Overall rating
4/5

Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is unlike anywhere else on the planet and wouldn’t be out of place in a Star Wars movie or a Salvador Dalí painting. I love walking and climbing between the serrated limestone towers that form the strangest of labyrinths in the Grand Tsingy section of the park. I also enjoy drifting through the Manambolo River Gorge in a pirogue (wooden dugout canoe) in the park’s Petit Tsingy section. But the park also shelters 11 different lemur species and over 100 types of birds. It was here that I first saw the Decken’s sifaka. And the promise of fat-tailed dwarf lemurs or Cleese’s woolly lemurs just keeps calling me back. There are many birding prizes that can be difficult to see elsewhere. I spotted my first Madagascar fish eagle in the park. Birders come here specially to see the crested ibis, grey-throated rail and Henst’s goshawk.
