This first night is for rest after your flight and for us to finish preparing the safari vehicles. Depending on arrival time, your guide will give a briefing and, if daytime, you can explore Arusha; if at night, we recommend a good rest ahead of tomorrow’s safari.

Arusha is known as the safari capital of the world, and Arusha National Park is a perfect soft start. Forested slopes, Momella Lakes, and Mount Meru’s silhouette make a beautiful backdrop for birding and scenic drives. Expect Superb Starlings, flamingos, bee-eaters, kingfishers, hornbills, and more. Binoculars are invaluable here — extra eyes mean extra sightings.

After breakfast, drive 1–2 hours to Tarangire, often called a paradise for elephants. Follow the life-giving Tarangire River as herds gather beneath ancient baobabs. Look for lion, leopard, giraffe, and (if luck is with us) large pythons draped in trees. Afternoon light turns the savannah golden as the day winds down.

Drive 3–5 hours through the Maasai Steppe past bomas, acacia plains, and the ancient Engaruka ruins. Lake Natron’s mineral waters host vast colonies of greater and lesser flamingos; red hues come from salt-loving microorganisms. To the south rises Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai “Mountain of God,” and the dramatic Gregory Rift escarpment.

After breakfast, drive to Ngorongoro and descend 600 meters to the crater floor. Over 25,000 animals live here: elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, hippo, lion — and with luck, black rhino. We usually pause at a hippo pool for our picnic before continuing across grasslands and marsh. En route to or from the crater, an optional stop at a Maasai boma offers cultural insight.
