Day 2

Driven from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park

Driven from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park

You will be picked up from Sleep Inn Hotel and driven to Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). You will pass through the countryside and have nice scenery of beautiful valleys and mountains. The trip will take about 6 hours. On arrival, you will enjoy a hot lunch at the lodge and have some time to relax.

At around 3:30 pm, you will go on a boat game drive for about 2 hours on the Great Rufiji River until sunset. You have the chance to enjoy the fauna and flora, the beautiful scenery with a lot of wild animals and many species of birds.

After breakfast, depart for a full-day game drive in Nyerere National Park. You will have a picnic lunch in the afternoon.

The park was formerly called “Selous Game Reserve”. In 2019, it gained national park status. It is the largest national park in Africa, covering an area of 30,000 square kilometres. The park’s history and sense of mystique add to its attractions. It was named after Fredrick Courtney Selous, a well-renowned explorer and British Army Officer in the Royal Fusiliers. Selous was killed in combat along the Rufiji River which flows through the park. Today, it takes its name from Julius Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, widely viewed as the father of the modern-nation state.

You will pass through farms and villages with beautiful landscapes as well as the Great Rift Valley. Arrival in Ruaha National Park will be in the late afternoon. Almost as large as the Serengeti, it remains one of the most exciting game reserves with its untouched nature. It is a birdwatcher's paradise with 350 different species of birds. Wildlife is concentrated along the Great Ruaha River which is the heart of the wildlife in the park. You will see many waterbuck, impala and Grant's gazelle. The shores of the Great Ruaha River are the permanent hunting ground for lion, leopard, jackal, hyena, and African wild dog. Enjoy the fascinating beauty of the Ruaha National Park and then drive back to your lodge.

Mikumi National Park is a well-known park in Tanzania. It is famous for its population of elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elands, greater kudus, wildebeests, and roan and sable antelopes. Predators include tree-climbing lions (in large numbers), leopards, wild dogs, and black-backed jackals. More than 300 species of birds have been recorded here including Eurasian migrants such as the red-billed oxpecker, marabou stork, and lilac-breasted roller.
