Mozambique's main airport is Maputo International Airport (MPM), located about 3km/2mi from the capital, Maputo.

Aside from fly-in beach holidays, Mozambique is mainly a self-drive destination. You can either rent a car in Maputo or in Johannesburg (South Africa), from where you can drive to Maputo. Mozambique is a large country, so unless you have a couple of months, most self-drive is restricted to the south of the country.

The distance between Johannesburg and Maputo is about 550km/342mi and the drive takes around 7 hours*. Aside from any other stops along the way, you’ll need to allow about 2 hours extra for the border crossing.

Passport, Visa & Other Entry Requirements

Entry requirements can change, so please contact your local Mozambican embassy/high commission to verify that the information below is current.

  • A passport is required for all foreign visitors and has to be valid for at least six months.
  • Passports must have at least three empty pages.
  • Citizens of most countries require a visa, which can be obtained in advance on the e-Visa platform or from a Mozambican embassy or high commission.
  • Citizens of several African countries, including South Africa, don’t need a visa and will get a 30-day entry permit on arrival.
  • When arriving from a yellow-fever-infected country, a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required.
