Six day safari with Eastco
We spent many hours searching the internet and guide books for the right mixture of safari and culture experience. Eastco caught our attention because of their long service to community conservation and their mainly excellent reviews and guides. We got in touch with Simon and planned a short safari. This was late notice and we were glad to be able to experience what we did.
Myself, husband, teenage daughter and young son spent six days with Eastco this past August. We decided to fly out to the Serengeti because of the short time we had and after Simon's advice, spent our two days in the central area at the Acacia camp instead of rushing north for the chance of a river crossing. This was incredible for the many lions we saw, three leopards, one walking nearby the car along the road early morning, and a couple of mature cheetahs. A fantastic way to start the safari!
We then drove east to the Wildlife Lodge on the Ngorongoro crater rim. We were a bit skeptical at first as had fifty fifty reviews, but as Simon said, the views were incredible and that's what made our stay here. It was not as busy as we thought it would be at the lodge, but the game viewing in the crater met all our expectations, crowds of cars around any lion sighting and dust from the cars everywhere. Nice rhino in the distance and a few lazy lions. Bernard did warn us it was a bit touristy! But w still enjoyed the experienced, although I must admit I was ready to head out at lunch time.
The last two nights were at Boundary Hill Lodge in Tarangire. Simon forewarned us that this was partially his property, but also the Masai communities had a shareholding. When we arrived and saw the rooms and the dining terraces we could obviously see the WOW factor. The meals were by far the best we have had on a holiday anywhere. The young cook, Bryan, was exceptional. Apparently Simon took him in when he was only 12 years old and helped him with schooling and taught him the trade. He was very polite, friendly and talkative and really took the time to involve the children, even showing them how to make chapattis and fresh bread rolls. The staff at Boundary Hill were exceptional, we felt at home. The kids had Tinga Tinga art lessons and their efforts now adorn the study!
Tarangire is very much underrated for its game viewing, could not believe how many elephants we saw, as well as three lions and a leopard outlined at dusk on an acacia tree along the swamp. We were very lucky. Or maybe I think Bernard’s 20 odd years of experience was the “luck” we had. He obviously knew every back road and track in Tarangire and certainly was able to show us sights we would never have seen normally. He is also a great raconteur and has a very dry humour. Bernard made our trip exceptional.
A 350km desert safari adventure on horseback...riding all day and sleeping out under the stars
Namibia Horse Safari Company is a first class company which is run professionally. The logistics run like clockwork with a team who are responsive and knowledgeable. The equipment is well maintained and designed for the safari. Most importantly the horses are well trained for the safari and are treated with care and knowledge throughout. The safari significantly exceeded my expectations.

Makoro and Moremi safari
Our safari was organised by Destination Okavango who found Bushbabycalls and tailored the trip to suit the interests of my husband and I. We'd looked into group safaris but couldn't find anything for our dates and had one quote for an individual safari which was higher than that of Bushbabycalls so chose them. We had a meeting with MG the afternoon before the trip and he explained the plan - drive to mokoro station, mokoro trip to wild camp site on an island 2 nights there and then drive a few hours to northern Moremi for 2 nights camping between Xanakaxa and Third Bridge, then our final destination near Khwai. Some things had to be organised at the last minute which took up a little time . Satellite phones meant MG could organise things from afar and communicate with our guide Glenn. We had requested a guide who knew about birds and Glenn was excellent . He knew exactly where to look and helped us identify around a eighty birds in the last 4 days - my favourites were a carmine beeeater and a ground hornbill. Glenn was familiar with the roads and other guides in Moremi and enabled us to see a leopard and youngster up a tree, two packs of wild dogs and a striped jackal, plus countless antelopes, zebra and giraffe. We were told how hippos communicate and how a dominant male rules the roost. We had a lot of enjoyment listening to hippos harrumphing to each other while we lay in our tent in the evening. We could stand up in the tent and the sponge mattresses with sheets and pillows were very comfortable. The shower had nice warm water and the pit toilet served the purpose. Our cook Nike was a genius at producing tasty meals from a wood fire. We had our own driver as well as the cook and guide. They looked after us so well, making us feel comfortable and chatting about their lives and about wildlife. Everyone spoke very god English as well as Setswana. The trip on the mokoro was so peaceful , being punted through water lilies and greenery. Our guide there Opa was only 23 but had been to a school specially for guides and took us on a walking safari where we saw elephants and red letchwe. He also managed to get the mokoro very near a group of hippos so we could observe them at close quarters. MG was very solicitous and told us we could ask the staff to change the plan if we'd prefer to do something else, but their plan suited us fine. We hadn't given any thought to the journey from Maun to Moremi which was on an unmade road, so very dusty. We wore sunglasses to protect our eyes but everything was covered in dust by the time we reached the camp. The shower was very welcome that night. All in all an excellent trip. We definitely recommend Bushbabycalls.
