Malaria & Safety – Rubondo Island National Park

Rubondo Island Safaris Rubondo Island National Park

Safety

Rubondo Island National Park is very safe to visit in our opinion. The fact that it is an uninhabited island makes it inherently safe. As is the case all over the world, most crime occurs in urban centers, so normal precautions should be taken when visiting cities during your tour (see ‘Cities & Urban Areas: Safety Precautions’ below).

Malaria & Vaccinations

Malaria is a small concern on Rubondo Island. You can protect yourself by taking antimalarial medication. Applying mosquito repellent (those containing DEET are most effective) and wearing long trousers and long sleeves in the evening also helps. We also recommend you get advice about vaccinations before your trip.

Chimp Trekking

Chimp trekking is very safe. The chimpanzees on Rubondo Island are only semi-habituated and will mostly keep their distance. As they get more relaxed, they will start to ignore visitors and go about their daily activities while you watch them. To help to ensure your safety, you’ll get a briefing before your chimp trek. Your guide will also give directions while you’re with the chimps. Also take note of the ‘Chimp Trekking Safety Precautions’ below.
