Sehlabathebe National Park has dry winters and wet summers. Winter and summer are at opposite times to these seasons in the northern hemisphere. Due to the high altitude of the park, the climate is temperate and nights are cold. Warm clothing is a necessity throughout the year.

Dry Season April to September – Winter

During the winter there is not much rainfall. Days are sunny but tend to be cool, while the nights are cold.

  • April – This is the end of summer. It cools down and the average daytime temperature is 17°C/63°F. The rain falls away.
  • May, June, July & August – These are the coldest months. The average afternoon temperature is 13°C/55°F, and early mornings are cold with an average of 1°C/34°F. The air is very dry and it seldom rains.
  • September – The first rains come as a relief and temperatures rise a little. Daily averages range from 5°C/41°F at night to 15°C/59°F during the day.

Wet Season October to March – Summer

Summer sees regular rainfall. Rain rarely lasts very long. Most of it comes as afternoon storms, but mornings are usually clear and sunny. Daytime temperatures are lovely and nights are cool.

  • October – Afternoon storms are frequent and all the dust of the Dry season settles. Temperatures range from 6°C/43°F in the morning to 16°C/61°F in the afternoon.
  • November, December, January & February – Expect daytime temperatures of around 21°C/70°F. It rains regularly, mostly in the late afternoon.
  • March – Rainfall diminishes slightly. The skies are usually clear and if it rains, it is mostly late in the day. Temperatures of 21°C/70°F can be expected.
