Nyerere National Park is the largest national park in Tanzania and one of the largest protected areas in Africa. Previously known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park provides shelter for large numbers of elephants, lions, buffaloes, wild dogs, crocodiles, and hippopotamuses. The Rufiji River also has abundant birdlife. The reserve was named after a famous British soldier, but nowadays it is called Nyerere National Park.
