The Majestic elephants and the Majestic Kilimanjaro

What better way to start a safari in Kenya than to spot 5 cheetahs on a tree! That was what welcomed our group as we entered the Amboseli National Park. The entire experience at the Amboseli National park was excellent. We stayed at the Serena Lodge and the accommodation, food and the overall experience left nothing to be desired for.
The weather was very pleasant. The mornings and evenings made everything the sunlight touched, turn orange!
The guides we had were with us for the entire tour (before and beyond Amboseli) were well versed in the information about the park and the wildlife found here. We used Land Cruisers to travel around (these vehicles were with us from Nairobi till we went back to Nairobi) and had very comfortable travel.
The main wild life we saw at Amboseli were the Elephants. We were a photo tour group and the objective at Amboseli was to get an Elephant looking towards the camera, with the Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background. And we did manage to get it quite easily, multiple times!
Other than this, there were quite a few zebra, wildebeest, giraffes, gazelles, etc. Though not known for the predators, I got to see my first pair of African lions here. Hyenas, hippos, etc. too were seen, though not in large numbers. The park also houses a huge variety of birds!
The sunset over the distant mountains in the evenings is also a sight to behold. I would recommend this is as one of the Must See places in Kenya.

The amazing feeling you get by standing in the midst of a herd of wild Elephants...

Amboseli is a pretty nice park for game-drives. It is not the park you want to visit if you have to see the "big five", because you won't find any rhinos or leopards here. But if you want to experience the incredible feeling you get when 20-30 huge african elephants silently passes by your car, this park is for you. If you are lucky you may get the oppurtunity to get a glympse of the largest free-standing mountain in the world, Kilimanjaro. The mountain is oft visible in the morning or evening hours. Though Amboseli is several miles away from the top, it still amazes hugely.

As for accomodation I can highly recommend Kibo Safari Camp. This is a luxury tented lodge, minutes from Kimana Gate. The staff, food, location etc. were excellent.

Per March 2015 the park were not overcrowded by cars, but only a few. This is much because of the reduction in tourism Kenya is experiencing. I personally prefer not to be part of a swarm of buzzing Toyotas when on game-drives, but rather have the oppurtunity to feel like in the only man-made creation in sight. This enables one to connect with the wildlife and nature in a special way. Nothing beats the sense of peace you get when the driver switches of the engine, and all you hear is Amboseli herself.

Amboseli has a wide variety of animals and birds, capped off by beautiful views of Kilimanjaro. We saw so much more than we ever thought we would and the landscape is beautiful - it seems to change every few kilometers! We stayed in the Porini camp and couldn't have been happier with everything we experienced.

I have a great experience of safaris in East Africa but never visited Amboseli. Although it lacks the roughness and wilderness of the Serengeti or Masai Mara, it sure is one of the most scenic and beautiful national parks I've ever seen.

Amboseli is the place to go if you want to see elephants. We saw so many elephants and up very close. It was unbelievable. There were many baby elephants too, which were really cute. It was fun watching them playing in the mud and washing themselves. The road to Amboseli is fantastic - new tarmac road the whole way and completely free of traffic.
