Sacred Forests Protected by the Antandroy Community

Ifotaka Community Forest is a community-run area covering a deciduous tamarind woodland and a taboo-protected spiny forest. The local Antandroy people have opened this area up for tourism, offering guided activities to guests staying at Mandrare River Camp. The tented lodge on the bank of the Mandrare River is run as a high-end, all-inclusive African safari camp with excellent service, food and attention to detail. This formula, so popular in some African countries with an established safari industry, is quite unique in Madagascar. The forests are home to big troops of ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux’s sifakas and skilled guides take visitors to track these charismatic primates. Reptiles and birds are well represented too. Other activities include a boat trip on the Mandrare River, a tour of a sacred burial site and a traditional dance show at sunset in a baobab forest. The package combining a stay here with a stay at the equally high standard Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge is highly recommended.
