Isalo National Park has more than 80 recorded bird species. The most sought-after bird here is the localized Benson’s rock thrush, which is remarkably easy to see. Sightings are almost guaranteed at the Piscine Naturelle, the natural pools that are the focus of the most popular short hike in the park. Other species that birders get excited about include the Madagascar sandgrouse, Madagascar partridge and Pollen’s vanga. The delightful Madagascar hoopoe, one of many endemics unique to Madagascar, is just one of the more common birds to look out for.

Best Time for Bird Watching
Bird watching in Isalo is good throughout the year, but the best time is from September to November. Many birds tend to be inactive from May to August, in the middle of the Dry season, and the wettest months from December to March don’t offer ideal hiking conditions for reaching the best areas. Migratory birds are present in the wet summer months from November to April.
