Winter (May to September, also known as the Dry season) is the best time for wildlife viewing throughout the region. Vegetation thins during this time, while animals seeking water congregate at rivers and waterholes, and this only gets better for wildlife watching as the winter goes on. The month of September, in particular, is a great time as the Dry season is at its peak and the mornings are warmer. This is also the ‘off-season’ for tourists, so lower rates may apply. However, the main activities in Kapama, elephant-back safaris and elephant interactions, aren’t really affected by the seasons, and are good throughout the year.

Best Time May to September (Dry season)
High Season October to March (Few crowds)
Low Season April to September (Great time for wildlife viewing)
Best Weather April to May and September to October (Temperate with little rain)
Worst Weather June to August (Mornings and nights are chilly) and December to February (Hot and humid)

May to September Dry Season – Winter

  • It's easy to spot wildlife as they gather at waterholes and rivers and the vegetation is thinner
  • Off-season for tourists
  • Clear, sunny skies
  • Temperate weather with very little humidity
  • Risk of malaria is low
  • Very dry and dusty
  • Warm clothing needed for chilly, morning game drives

October to April Wet Season – Summer

  • Fresh, lush green scenery
  • Animals are in good physical shape, and there are many newborns
  • Birding is excellent due to the arrival of migratory birds
  • The Dry season has better wildlife viewing
  • It can get busy with tourists, especially during school holidays
  • Daytime is hot and humid
  • Antimalarials medication is needed
