Nosy Mangabe Special Reserve (which is part of Masoala National Park) is not known for its birding: many species that can be found on the mainland are absent from the island. Even so, if you’re just passing the island on your way to Masoala by boat, it’s worth scanning the shores for waders and other waterbirds. The Madagascar pratincole, for example, can often be found on the sandy beaches. The absence of birds such as couas, which are the main predators of chameleons and geckos, is what makes the island rewarding for reptile watching.

Best Time for Bird Watching
Bird watchers are most likely to visit Nosy Mangabe on the way to or from Masoala National Park, a well-known birding hot spot and the best place for the hard-to-see helmet vanga. The best time for bird watching in Masoala is from September to January, when birds are most vocal and active. This is also when helmet vangas are nesting. Migratory birds from Europe and North Africa are present in Masoala from November to April.
